The air is crisp, the leaves are turning, and your favourite park is calling.

You’ve mapped out your route, curated the perfect playlist, and can already envision yourself taking in the stunning fall colors.

HOLD UP! Have you packed everything you need to have an unforgettable autumn adventure?

Not to worry, we’ve partnered with our friends at Subaru Canada to create a list of must-haves for the perfect fall colours experience:

1. Capture the magic with a good camera

While smartphones can definitely pick up the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of the fall foliage, our photography experts would argue that nothing beats capturing fall colours with a good camera.

A camera with zoom capabilities will help you capture the intricate details of the changing leaves. Whether you’re zooming in on a single leaf or framing a panoramic shot of the forest ablaze with colour, you’ll want those memories to last.

2. Get a closer look with binoculars

A pair of binoculars will help you immerse yourself in the moment without disturbing the wildlife.

Perhaps you’ll spot a shy deer in the distance or bring the treetops into focus, adding another layer to your nature experience.

Binoculars are especially handy for birdwatchers, who can spot migrating species making their way south for the winter!

3. Lots of layers

Ontario’s autumn weather can be unpredictable, with crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and chilly evenings.

And it doesn’t take long for chilly weather to dampen your spirits if you’re not dressed for it – especially if it starts to rain!

Start with a base layer made of wool or synthetics – they wick moisture and keep you warm, unlike cotton, which traps cold and dampness. Long johns and a long-sleeved top will keep you cozy too.

For your mid-layer, a medium-weight fleece is perfect for the season. Finish with a waterproof, breathable jacket to stay dry without trapping sweat.

Make sure your footwear is up to the task with sturdy, comfortable hiking boots or shoes. Protect your feet with wool or synthetic socks, and always pack a spare pair in case your hike turns into a wet weather hike

Whether taking a leisurely stroll or tackling a more challenging hike, your feet will thank you.

Bonus: pack gloves and a toque – it might not be winter yet, but when the temperature drops, these small items can make all the difference in keeping your hike enjoyable!

4. Keep energized with snacks and drinks

No road trip is complete without snacks.

Pack a mix of healthy options like trail mix and fruit, but remember to treat yourself to some of your favourite comfort foods.

After all, a scenic lookout is even better with a delicious snack in hand!

5. Pack your vehicle with essentials

Your vehicle is more than just a way to get from Point A to Point B – it’s your mobile base camp. Make sure it’s stocked with everything you need:

  • favourite mug: don’t forget to pack a mug for sipping hot chocolate while you take in the views! And if you’re feeling creative, try out one of our 10 hot chocolate hacks for an extra cozy treat
  • portable charger: keep your devices powered up to capture all the stunning views
  • cozy blanket: stay warm and snug while you enjoy the autumn scenery
  • retro air freshener: fan of the smell of fresh pine? Bring the outdoors inside with our retro-inspired air freshener
  • change of clothes: better safe than sorry!

Bonus: Don’t forget your daily vehicle permit

Did you know many of our parks allow you to book your daily vehicle permit up to 5 days in advance of your visit?

Guaranteeing your spot is especially helpful for when peak fall colours arrive at some of our busier parks!
