5 ways to unplug and experience nature

This is your sign to trade your digital scrolling for some outdoor strolling!

Technology is amazing and offers us so many tools (including many we use for conservation in parks!). That said, balance is important, and humans can struggle with screentime.

Spending time in nature offers many physical and mental benefits, like a stronger immune system and reduced mental fatigue. Getting outside is particularly important in the winter, when there is less sunshine and the days are shorter.

Even with knowing all these health benefits, it can still be tough to unplug – so we put together a few steps to start you on your way:

1. Turn off your notifications

No, really.

Turn them off. Or turn your phone off altogether. Maybe it’s best to leave your phone at home – whatever you can safely do to disconnect from the virtual world, do it.

2. Immerse yourself in your nearest greenspace

Fling open your door and head out! Fresh air and birdsong are waiting for you.

If you like your walks to have a defined goal, try to identify as many birds as you can while on your journey.

Unfamiliar with bird species? Count how many you see (or hear), or use iNaturalist!

3. In fact, get absorbed by nature’s beautiful details

Have you ever looked at moss or lichen?

No, we mean really looked at it.

Notice its delicacy, its complex formation. Even the smallest parts of an ecosystem can offer stunning views.

Looking at nature up close, you can gain a new appreciation for the different lifeforms parks protect.

4. Stop reading this blog post

Period.

5. Oh, you’re still here?

Sometimes we need a little something extra to motivate us to get out the door.

If you need more inspiration, simply find a park near you and spend the day unwinding!

Maybe there’s a park you’ve always wanted to visit, or a trail you’ve always wanted to walk. Make today the day you fulfil your wish!

Celebrate National Day of Unplugging!

Whether the nature you visit is in your backyard, neighbourhood, or favourite park, we hope you take the opportunity to unplug from the virtual world and step into the natural world.
