Step off the beaten path and glide into the quiet wilderness of Algonquin Provincial Park‘s backcountry ski trails!
Here, snow-laden trees frame endless white corridors, and every turn reveals untouched beauty, frozen lakes, silent forests, and the crisp stillness of true northern solitude.

The park offers 72 km of groomed ski trails for all skill levels, taking you deep into Algonquin winter woods.
These trails aren’t just for skiing, they’re for reconnecting. With no crowds, no noise, and no rush, you’ll find yourself immersed in nature’s rhythm, where the only sounds are the whisper of your skis and the call of a distant raven.
Discover our trails
The Fen Lake trail system winds through hardwood forests typical of Algonquin’s west side. Here you’ll find 17.5 km of groomed and trackset ski trail. The trail offers some stunning views and some challenging terrain.
The Leaf Lake Ski trail system is a premiere cross-country ski trail well-suited for experienced skiers. It features multiple loops that vary from easy to very challenging, with steep uphill sections and long downhills. The trails go through hardwood forests and offer lookouts and views of a number of lakes. There’s plenty to explore with 36 km of groomed and trackset trails.
The Old Railway Bike Trail is a multi-purpose trail that starts at Mew Lake. It crosses the Old Airfield and connects with the historic Old Railway Bike Trail for 16 km of flat trail. This trail also allows walkers, dogs, snowshoers and winter bikes, so be prepared to share the trail with a variety of users.
The Sunday Lake Dogsled Trail is open for dogsledding (users are welcome to bring their own team, or book with an outfitter) or try skijoring with your dog. This 36 km trail features stacked loops of varying lengths. It covers hills and valleys through upland hardwoods and conifer forests, as well as visiting the edges of lakes and wetlands.
Minnesing Wilderness Ski Trail offers the seasoned wilderness skier 18 km of adventure through hardwood and mixed forests. This trail is ungroomed and unmaintained providing a challenge for enthusiasts on wide touring skis or snowshoes.
New for the 2025/2026 season: the Airfield Ski Trail! A new groomed and trackset ski trail is available at Mew Lake. The trail is a flat, 2.2 km loop. The Airfield Ski Trail is meant for the novice skier to give the activity a try and learn good techniques. We hope this trail will really “take off!”
This trail will provide opportunities for both classic and skate skiing, and — due to its proximity to the Mew Lake campground — boasts a heated washroom! This trail is only for use by cross-country skiers. If you want to explore the Airfield on foot, please use the multi-purpose trail that starts at the same location.
Craving an overnight backcountry ski experience
Both Fen and Leaf Lake Ski trails have warm-up cabins that can be rented overnight for a real wilderness skiing experience.

Reservations can be made online under Algonquin backcountry hiking tab.
Please note that backcountry winter camping is no longer permitted in the Mew Airfield. Backcountry winter camping is still permitted elsewhere, as long as you:
- have a permit
- are not on a designated winter or summer campsite
- are over 30 m away from a lakeshore, waterbody, trail or portage
Explore deeper; find your trail in Algonquin’s wild heart
