Along the Lake Superior Coast

The Trans-Canada Highway from Sault Ste. Marie to Wawa is among the most scenic drives in Ontario, and maybe even eastern Canada! Pancake Bay Provincial Park sits right on the route, so day trips south along Batchawana Bay or north along Lake Superior are a perfect way to experience Lake Superior and Algoma Country.

Hiking Algoma Country is a great way to get into nature and really experience the coast of Lake Superior. (Of course, Pancake Bay has great trails like the Edmund Fitzgerald Trail with its panoramic views!) South of Pancake Bay, Robertson Cliffs and Eagle Ridge trails both provide great views of the bays of Lake Superior and surrounding forests.

Or head north to…

Batchawana Bay Provincial Park, just 10 minutes up the road. Find a beautiful sandy beach, more sheltered waters for swimming or paddling, paddling rentals, picnic areas, a great little store, and more!

Drive a bit further (just an hour north of Pancake Bay) to Lake Superior Provincial Park. Numerous hiking trails (Orphan Lake Trail is a favourite!), picnic spots, and an excellent Visitor Centre are worth the visit!

And did you know your Pancake Bay camping permit is good for free day use, both here and at Batchawana?

The Town of Wawa is an hour and a half north of Pancake Bay. It’s famous for its roadside attraction: the Wawa Goose — a selfie-must!

The Algoma Central Railway leaves Sault Ste. Marie and travels north through the rugged Algoma Hills, with many scenic views and a stop at “Canyon Park,” a favourite painting location of the Group of Seven painters

The fall colours in Algoma Country are outstanding.

Along with Pancake Bay’s own Edmund Fitzgerald Lookout and Trail, Robertson Cliffs south of Batchawana Bay, and the trails in Lake Superior Provincial Park, fall hiking is as good as anywhere in Ontario.

You can also drive and take the fall scenery too!
